We are neighbors and residents

from all across the Richmond District, The Presidio, Presidio Heights and other nearby neighborhoods who have been (and continue to be) negatively affected by Lake Street being Slow. While we realize it has provided some neighbors with benefits and comfort, especially at the height of the pandemic shelter-in-place, the costs to our community now far outweigh the ever-decreasing benefits.

Slow Lake Street is hurting families. We are witness to Lake Street sitting empty most days, while neighboring streets (namely California St) have become gridlock traffic and a safety nightmare for residents, pedestrians, families and schools in the corridor.

Slow Lake Street is no longer safe. Now that usage has plummeted, ambiguous and unenforced traffic rules have created chaotic safety conditions and dangerous close-calls on a daily basis. Attentive parents no longer allow their kids to play in the Slow Street because of the increasingly dangerous, mixed-use conditions. Instead, they opt for the plentiful parks and open green spaces that are just a few feet away.

Most neighbors no longer support Slow Lake Street. Permanent Slow Street designation was granted and approved based on community feedback that reflected usage and traffic conditions prior to August 2021. Traffic patterns, volumes and conditions have changed drastically since then, and so have neighbors’ opinions about Slow Lake Street.

We hope you will add your name and your voice to the discussion to shape the future of Lake Street and our neighborhood which we all love so much.
